Powerball is one of the favorite games available to Vermont residents through the VT State Lottery. At the moment, the jackpot is worth $457,000,000. If you’re not familiar with the game and its rules, the guide below will help you learn the ropes.

How to Play

Getting the hang of the VT Powerball rules is simple. Even if you’re playing for the first time, the guide below will walk you through the most important steps. Here’s everything you need to do:

  1. Visit your preferred Vermont Lottery retail store and purchase a Powerball ticket. Each payslip contains five plays of $2.
  2. Complete the ticket by choosing five numbers from 1 to 69 and mark a single red Powerball number from 1 to 26.
  3. If you’re having trouble choosing the numbers, you can tick the Quick Pick box, and random numbers will be assigned to you.
  4. For a boost, you can check the Power Play option for $1 per play and increase the non-jackpot prize amount 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, or 10x.
  5. You can also purchase a ticket that’s good for up to 20 consecutive draws. In a special field on the payslip, you can indicate the number of draws you want to participate in. The ticket cost depends on the number of draws and panels you want.
  6. Print the ticket and sign your name on the back when you’re satisfied with the chosen numbers.
  7. Sit back, wait for the draw, and follow the winning numbers.

You can view the winning numbers on WCAX, channel 3, at 11 p.m. (EST). Alternatively, you can visit powerball.com or go to Vermont Lottery agent locations following the draw.

Although some states also support online Powerball, Vermont residents can only participate in the game by buying a ticket at a licensed Powerball retailer. The state currently doesn’t allow an online lottery.

Powerball Drawing Schedule

The Vermont Powerball draw is organized three times a week — every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. (EST). If you wish to play Powerball, you can purchase the tickets as late as 9:50 p.m. (EST) the night of the draw.

Payouts, Odds, and Rules

Powerball rules are simple to understand and follow. All you have to do is select six numbers — five white ball numbers from 1 to 69 and one red Powerball from 1 to 26.

The highest prize, the Powerball jackpot, goes to the person that guesses all six numbers. If more than one person hits the jackpot, the amount will be split equally between the winners. The second prize of $1,000,000 goes to the person who matches five white ball numbers, followed by seven additional rewards.

The table below shows you the payouts, prizes, and odds of winning.

Numbers Matched Prize Odds
5 WB + Red Powerball Jackpot 1:292,201,338.00
5 WB $1 million 1:11,688,053.52
4 WB + Red Powerball $50,000 1:913,129.18
4 WB $100 1:36,525.17
3 WB + Red Powerball $100 1:14,494.11
3 WB $7 1:579.76
2 WB + Red Powerball $7 1:701.33
1 WB + Red Powerball $4 1:91.98
One Red Powerball $4 1:38.32

How to Claim Vermont Powerball Prizes

If you’re one of the lucky winners, you need to claim the prize within a predetermined time frame. Here’s everything you should know to collect any winnings:

  • As mentioned, you must sign the back of the winning ticket and present it to the licensed retailer.
  • If the prize is less than $500, you can go to the nearest Vermont Lottery licensed agent locations where Powerball tickets are sold. There, your ticket will be verified and you’ll collect the money.
  • If the prize is larger than $500, however, you can purchase the Claim Form at the nearest Powerball retailer. The form will indicate all the steps you need to take to claim the prize.
  • You can claim Powerball prizes between $500 and $5,000 at any People’s United Bank location in Vermont.
  • If you win the jackpot, you can choose whether to be paid out in cash or annual installments after ticket validation.
  • The winner must claim all prizes within one year after the draw.

Vermont Powerball Biggest Winners

Although Vermont introduced Powerball back in 2003, the state has never seen a Powerball jackpot winner. Here are some large wins that have occurred in Vermont over the years:

  • VT sold only two winning Powerball tickets worth $1 million and $100,000. The first one was sold at the Price Chopper Store in Swanton, while the other sale occurred at Bourne’s Service Center on Shelburne Road in South Burlington.
  • In 2019, a $2,000,000 winning ticket was sold in Brandon, Vermont.
  • In 2021, Vermont stores sold two Powerball tickets worth $150,000 each.

Powerball History and Facts

  • Although Powerball entered the US in 1992, it only became available in Vermont in 2003.
  • Vermont is one of the US states where you can’t purchase Powerball tickets online. The only option is to visit the nearest retailer.
  • Powerball winners in Vermont have a year to claim the prize.
  • After claiming the prize, you need to disclose how you wish to collect it — in cash or annual installments. In any case, you have 60 days to declare it.
  • You must be 18 or older to purchase a Powerball ticket in Vermont.
